Last Wednesday evening, in really warm conditions, 15 runners from the Club joined 540 others in the Leicestershire Summer League Race, the Joy Cann Memorial 5. For many it was great to tackle, what is becoming a rarity, a pure road race over a typically undulating Leicestershire course. The progress many in the Club are making was exemplified by the fact that 2 runners, Katie Cotton’s 35.09 & Steve Fowler’s 35.47, were personal bests for the distance, with Tracey Glover’s 37.07 equalling her best. It was though the hard working Chris Pearson who led the Club’s contingent home with a chip time of 29.51 for 43rd place in a very competitive field. James Cassidy, running a well paced race, was next in 30.46 & 57th place with the Chapman brothers, Shane & Paul, not far behind in 30.58 & 31.09 & 61st & 64th places respectively. Andy Orme ran probably his best race for sometime in recording 32.34. For Andy, Chappers Snr & Jnr & Steve Fowler the race, more than anything, was testament to their powers of recovery just 10 days after being in the Club’s team with Gary Price that took part in the ultra challenging 24 Hour Addidas Thunder Run at Catton Park. Father & son duo Jack & Steve Leafe were next to finish in well run times of 33.12 & 33.46 with Gavin Horton & Chris Gunstone virtually inseparable with finishing chip times of 33.59 & 34.00 respectively. Christian Glover & triathlete Dave Eyre both gave solid performances with times of 34.28 & 35.00 with the improving Adrian Middleton recording a top 200 place finish in 35.44.
