Malcolm & Inge Moore travelled to Enzweingen, Germany which is near Stuttgart with Dave & Marie York for a ten day holiday break and to run in the Karlsruhe Half Marathon. They stayed with Inge’s brother who also is a member of the Nussdorfer running club that primarily run marathons and ultra distance races. This club also had a few runners competing and they joined them at the race venue.
Preceding the race Malcolm, Inge Dave and Marie trained on coffee, cake, beer and wine during various sight seeing excursions. Despite the calorie loading build up, all were happy with their performances.
Malcolm was first home in a field of over 5000 runners he was the 1259th man in a time of 1hr 45m 31s.This was his first longer race since a few Achilles problems and he was pleased to complete the race with feeling good. Best performance came from Marie who finished 246th lady in a time of 1hr 52m 31s this was also good enough for her to finish 5th in her age category. Dave was next home and was very pleased to break the 2hr barrier especially as he could not even run a few weeks before the event with a calf injury. He finished 2452nd man in a time of 1hr 58 m 57s.Finally Inge came home not too far behind Dave in a 2nd best half marathon time for her. She was the 720th lady to finish with a time of 2hr 05m 51s.
The weather was sunny and warm for the whole break and the German hospitality was first class. There was also a full Marathon run at the same time as the half and as one would expect the organisation for such a big event was excellent. It is certainly an event we could thoroughly recommend to anyone.
