Hawtin shines with quality performance
Barrow on Soar was the location for the first race in this year’s Leicestershire Road Running Winter League and 18 members from South Derbyshire Road Runners lined up on the start line with 567 other club runners in a high quality race. In clear, but very windy conditions, Andy Hawtin performed brilliantly to be first back in 54th place out of 374 in the men’s race in a chip time of 36.49. Chris Mason followed in 97th place in 38.43 and 1st place in the MV60 category. 2012 Club champion, Colin Mee in 121st in 40.15 followed next, which was a terrific performance given that work commitments have severely restricted his recent training. Andy Orme, who continues to improve with every race, was next in 41.07 and 144th place just edging out Steve Leafe after a duel that promises to be a regular feature of racing throughout the season. Paul McKay was next in 42.07 and 2 nd MV60 three places and a couple of seconds ahead of Rob Lower in 173rd place.
Gavin Horton and Ray Udall were next to cross the line in times of 43.13 and 43.38 respectively ahead of Christina Cooper, the Club’s only female representative, in a very respectable performance of 44.11 and 23rd place out of 193 in the women’s race. Steve Fowler’s 44.43 indicates that his journey back to peak fitness remains on track as he managed on this occasion to get the better of Malcolm Moore and Gary Price in 46.18 and 47.08 respectively. The ever consistent Trevor Rickman was next in 48.49 ahead of Peter Barsby in 49.39 and super vet Dave York in 50.30. Making a welcome appearance Kevin Moore was next in 57.13 with Club stalwart Roger Barraclough completing the finishers in 74.14.
