Gunstone Shines!
For South Derbyshire Road Runners the penultimate race in this year’s Derby Runner XC series at Fosse Meadow, Sharnford on Sunday, was characterised by some terrific inter club racing. While the weather was bright and sunny the single lap course, including two knee deep water hazards, was still a testing challenge for the competitors who lined up on the start line.
Chris Gunstone showed that his current training towards the Edinburgh Marathon in May is going well when he was first back for the Club in 46 th place ahead of Colin Mee in a well run 65th place. There have been some really tight battles between Steve Leafe and Andy Orme throughout the whole series and this continued in this race with Leafe just getting the better of his younger rival in 99th and 100th places respectively.
Gavin Horton continued his steady recent improvement to finish in 116th followed across the line after another titanic struggle by Adrian Middleton and Malcolm Moore with Middleton just edging it in 141 st with Moore one place behind in 142nd.
Steve Fowler, steadily making his way back to full fitness, completed the scorers in the men’s race with a hard run 146th place. There was a welcome first appearance of the series from Inge Moore in the women’s race and she should be well pleased with her 75 th place finish in a very competitive field.
