In January 2007 SDRR joined forces with Washlands Womens Runing club and the South Derbyshire Primary Care Trust in a project to introduce new people to walking and running for health and fitness. Resulting from this initiative SDRR set up an ongoing walking section which still flourishes today and welcomes new members regularly.
The group meets every Monday, except Bank Holidays, in the cafe area of the Greenbank Lesiure Centre at 7.15 pm – setting off for a walk that lasts approximately one hour. During summer months the 15-20 regulars have taken the opportunity to visit other venues away from Swadlincote and it’s surrounding area to complete the 3.5 to 4 mile walk. Places visited have included Conkers, Castle Gresley/Linton National Forest area, Rosliston Forestry Centre, Calke Park, and the Washlands area of Burton.
During evening walks, from the Leisure Centre, in the Swadlincote area we try to vary routes by taking paths away from main roads using many of the new footpaths created with the development of the National Forest.
As the evenings draw in during the winter months the group returns to more localised routes including the neighbourhoods of Newhall Midway, Church Gresley and Woodville.
We do our best to ensure that all capabilities are catered for, we are a friendly group of people enjoying the benefits of the exercise that walking provides. Some members also meet up on other occassions in the week to enjoy a walk with friends.
If you are interested go to the Join Us page and send us an e mail with your details or just turn up on a Monday and ask for Jim Baxter the Walk Leader with SDRR.
