Carnival Atmosphere for the Burton 10
There was a carnival atmosphere pre & post race at the welcome return of this event which was tempered slightly at race time by the exceptionally warm conditions. By fielding 30 runners in the almost 300 strong field the Club were the best represented of the participant clubs and it was Shane Chapman, showing no ill effects from his recent marathon, who led the way home with a well judged 66.26 for 24th place. Andy Hawtin was well to the fore for most of the race until he was affected by injury & limped home in 67.07 & a gallant 31st place. Chris Mason, another getting back into racing after a spring marathon, was next to finish in 33rd place in 67.35 ahead of Stuart Halsey & Paul Chapman who both ran well to record 69.09 & 69.38 in conditions that were more suited to barbecuing & a cool beer. Andy Orme, running sensibly and another getting back to form after London ran well for 71.31 & 47th place getting the better, on this occasion, of the super vet Colin Mee. Christian Glover, in serious training for an upcoming kick boxing bout, showed he is in good physical shape by finishing in 74.05. There was next the first really close inter personal battle of the day, with birthday boy Gavin Horton, in his best performance for some time, just edging Club stalwart Rob Lower, in times of 74.46 & 74.48 respectively. Steve Fowler, another who battled gamely with injury, finished next in 76.26 from Club race debutant, Matt Clemson in 77.37. Kelly Knight, the Clubs first finisher in the women’s race, ran brilliantly for 87th place overall and a really creditable 77.46. Ashley Parkes & Tracey Glover were virtually inseparable as they raced for the line with, despite being given identical times of 78.29, Ashley just edging it on the line. Adrian Middleton did well when his 78.52 made him the final finisher for the Club in the top 100. Christina Cooper continued her good recent form as she finished in 79.39 ahead of Club Championship debutant, Katie Cotton, in 80.22. Not far behind were Wayne Kelleher & Gary Price as they battled against the conditions to record times of 80.49 & 81.02 respectively. Nikki Reeves proved what a good acquisition she’s been for the Club as she finished ahead of debutant Cheryl Bell & Sam Skidmore who were given identical times of 86.26 with Cheryl just edging it in a sprint finish. Dave Renshaw just missed the 90 minute mark as he crossed the line in 90.53 ahead of Lisa Wright & Chris Morton who finished in times of 95.12 & 99.55 respectively. Mark Skidmore & Katie Kift were also almost inseparable as they battled for the line with Mark just edging it in 107.57 to Katie’s 107.58. Christine Matthews, another making a very welcome racing debut for the Club, completed the Club finishers in a well run 128.03.
James Cassidy was in action with thousands of others in the Manchester 10k and ran superbly for 39.12 to finish only 229 places behind the great Kenenisa Bekele.
Louise Insley continued to battle on the national stage as she ran for her first claim club Heanor RC in the British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF) Road Relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham. Again, it was a medal winning day for Louise when her club took the silver medal in the WV35 category and her 18.01, over a very challenging 3 mile course, gave her the 7th fastest time overall.
