After the great performances by the SDRR ladies’ teams at the last 2 RunDerby races, it was the turn of the men in the latest event, the Hairy Helmet Relay on Friday. The course was just over 2 miles long, at Darley Park, and the increasingly wet conditions on a hilly parkland course proved a real challenge. The younger men’s team ran very strongly to come 5th overall out of over 170 teams. Jack Leafe led the team out in an excellent 11 minutes and 4 seconds, which was the 4th fastest time of the night for any runner, and he was supported by strong performances from Shane Chapman (12.07), Chris Pearson (12.01) and James Cassidy (12.04) for an aggregate time of 47 minutes and 15 seconds.
In the super vet category, Colin Mee, in his first race for many months after being hit by injury, led the team out in a great time of 13 mins 08 seconds, supported by Andy Orme (13.22), Steve Leafe (13.24) and Malcolm Moore in 14.59. The aggregate time of 54.50 was good enough for 4th place in their age category, and 33rd overall.
Despite the rain, everyone enjoyed the race and it looks to be an event SDRR will support in future years.”
