13 SDRR members braved the wet and windy weather on Saturday morning to take part in the Seagrave Wolds Challenge. The race, an off road run or walk of 16 miles through the countryside around Seagrave in Leicestershire, is also famous for its post-race catering. Despite the rain and strong winds there were over 500 finishers and, writes Steve Leafe, some great performances from our participants.Leading the way home & running together were Chris Pearson and Shane Chapman. But for an unscheduled diversion which added over half a mile to their run, they would have been even higher placed, but Chris still finished in 29th in 2.03:17, just ahead of Shane in 30th in 2.03.20. Regular competitor in the race, Steve Leafe was next in 43rd in 2.07.20, closely followed by another Seagrave veteran, Simon Reynolds, 49th in 2.10.02. The evergreen Ray Mortlock had another strong race, finishing in 107th in 2.21.26; whilst husband and wife, Paul and Tracey Glover, ran the course together after a long season’s racing, Tracey finishing in 128th in 2.26.21 just ahead of Paul in 130th in 2.26.43.
Mark Nixon, another runner who has completed a number of Seagrave Challenges, was next back, in 180th in 2.42.34. Since his excellent time in the Worksop half marathon Dave Eyre has struggled with illness but still battled through to finish in 231st in 2.54.52. Sam Skidmore and Heidi Elliott were next back with Sam finishing in 324th in 3.31.18 and Heidi in 360th, in 3.50.34. The final competitors for SDRR were Robin Barber and Mark Skidmore, who chose the Challenge Walk option, finishing respectively in 446th and 447th positions, in 5.28.08 and 5.28.21.The catering was up to its usual high standard, with food and drink stops every 4 miles, and the apple crumble and custard at the end being a particular favourite.
Shouldn’t leave the weekends racing without mentioning terrific performances by two of our runners who are currently away at University. Jack Leafe was first back in the Reading ParkRun & Dan Dawe was 4th out of 188 in a XC race in Bristol. Well done guys!!!
