‘Ten out of Ten’ performances
The revamped Burton 10, the third race in this year’s Burton & District Summer Road Racing League, saw 32 runners from the Club lining up on the start line with 250 others.
It was a really successful day for the Club, both in terms of team & individual performances, as 16 of these runners achieved Run Britain PBs for the distance. Some of the Club’s runners are enjoying the form of their lives, a fact highlighted by seven of the Club’s men Andy Hawtin (8th in 62:32), John Morgan (15th in 64:25), Stuart Halsey (23rd in 65:27), Andy Windle (30th in 66:45), Simon Reynolds (31st in 66:51), Andy Orme (39th in 68:16) & Tom Bradley (43rd in 69:01) all ducking beneath the 70 minute benchmark for the distance. Tom Eyre, one of those achieving a PB, was next in 72:58 before Christina Hawtin, making a really welcome racing appearance after an injury enforced absence, stopped the clock in 73:11. Glenn Smith ran well for his 74:09 before two of the Club’s runners who tackled this year’s London Marathon, Nigel Atkins & Tracey Glover, showed they have recovered well as they finished in 74:59 & 76:45 respectively. Close behind and scoring valuable team points was Caley Parnell’s 76:53, with one of the best marathon runners the Club has ever produced, Rob Lower, finishing in 77:19. Some close inter-Club racing involved Lisa Wright, Peter Barsby, Laura Harper & Paul Glover as they finished in 79:06, 79:09, 80:03 & 80:16 respectively. The ultra-consistent Tim Argent was next in 81:51 just getting the better of Mark Murkin’s 82:24 & Gary Price’s 83:47 before only 6 seconds separated David Lunn, as he continued his 2016 racing odyssey here with 87:51, & two of the Club’s MV60 athletes Graham Blackshaw in 87:53 & Steve Tempest in 87:57. Tony Richards, making his racing debut for the Club, ran well for 89:24 before Kat Smith achieved a well-deserved PB of 92:05. Karen Wilks, Robin Thorne & Maria Allen were all credited with the same time of 93:26 before Alison Shearer, Linda Tempest & Cath Johnston gave everything as they completed the finishers for the Club in 95:09, 115:34 & 124:24 respectively.
Much further afield, & in much higher temperatures, Louise Insley was competing in the European Vets Non-Stadia 10k Championships in Vila Real, Portugal. The journey proved really worthwhile as her 39:08 gave her a superb 8th place overall in the women’s race &, more importantly, 1st place in the WV45 category.
