Any thoughts that this year’s London Marathon would be a more somber affair, following the tragic events at the Boston Marathon, were quickly dispelled as the runners were supported by enthusiastic crowds, estimated at 800,000, all round the iconic 26.2 miles. After the impeccably observed and poignant period of silence the runners got away in warm sunshine that as the race progressed made for quite challenging conditions at street level. The Club had five competitors in this year’s race and it was Chris Mason who set the pace with 3.07.53, which was good enough for a place in the top 2000 finishers and 4th place overall in the MV60 category.   London Marathon veteran, Rob Lower, was next to finish in a superb 3.22.44. This is the 20th consecutive year that Rob has run the London Marathon, a testimony to the significant amount of money he’s raised for charity, his durability and his significant ability to locate a place year on year in this most sought after of races. As a contrast Gary Price, making his marathon debut, was next to finish in 4.17.50 followed by another London Marathon veteran, Ron Lane in 4.22.06 and Alison Shearer in 4.25.26. All three had the tremendous satisfaction of not only completing the race but knowing that they were amongst the first 50% of finishers.
